The island of Borkum consistently pursues an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable development. The island’s self-sufficient drinking water supply, fed by a valuable freshwater lens beneath the body of the island, is a central component of this concept.
Water is life – and a special experience on Borkum!
With the Water Museum (watertoorn-borkum.de), we are already making it possible to experience the conscious use of drinking water as a resource in a unique way. And now we are going one step further: we are inviting everyone to actively help shape the water transition on Borkum!
Drink water, protect the climate
Enjoying Borkum’s drinking water straight from the tap is not only healthy, but also active climate protection. By installing six modern drinking water dispensers on the island, we want to reduce the use of climate-damaging plastic bottles. Our drinking water dispensers are strategically distributed across the island so that fresh drinking water is always available on discovery tours. You can also purchase special drinking water bottles that can be used perfectly in combination with our drinking water dispensers.
Interactive learning with the water master
The drinking water dispensers do not only offer refreshment, but also access to digital content. By scanning the QR code, water master Tjark Akkermann takes you into the fascinating world of Borkum’s drinking water. Exciting stories and interesting knowledge about drinking water are conveyed here – always enriched by local, cultural or historical aspects.
